Château Gaillard

Located on a cliff overlooking the Seine River and guarding the passage into Normandy, Château Gaillard was a medieval castle built by Richard the Lion-Heart in the 12th century. It was captured and partially collapsed by the French in 1204. Changing hands between England and France several times over the next two centuries, it was permanently taken by the French in 1449 and is now a historic French monument. These photos show the ruins of Château Gaillard as well as the Seine River and the city of Les Andelys where our ship was docked.
